Philippines: 18 soldiers dead in clashes with Abu Sayyaf militants

    • From the section Asia

The Philippines military says 18 soldiers have been killed in fierce fighting with Islamist militants in the south of the country.

It says more than 50 other soldiers were wounded on Saturday during the clashes with members of the Abu Sayyaf group on Basilan island.

Five militants including a Moroccan national were killed, the army said.

The army was reportedly targeting an Abu Sayyaf commander who has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

The US government has offered a reward of up to $5m (£3.5m) for information leading to the capture of Isnilon Hapilon.

At least four of the soldiers were beheaded in the clashes with about 100 Abu Sayyaf militants, AFP quoted a regional military spokesman as saying.

"Our group was heading to attack them. On the way, they were ambushed," Colonel Benedict Manquiquis, spokesman for the army unit involved in the battle, told radio station DZRH.

"The enemy had the high ground so no matter where our soldiers fled to seek cover, they could still be hit by the heavy firepower and improvised explosive devices," he said.

Among the five militants killed were a Moroccan, Mohammed Khattab, and one of Hapilon's sons, Ubaida, Reuters reported.

Jungle warfare is a different animal. Unconventional guerrillas generally have the advantage. When we were in Vietnam we took a lot of casualties, luckily for us we could inflict a lot on the enemy thanks to our Air Force, the Philippines isn't lucky enough to have that capability.

Thus the PH Air Force procurement of aircraft designed for COIN operations should be pushed through as the PH Air Force only have very few SF260s and OV-10s.

I have been watching the news about this ambush and noticed that the PH Army is using KM450 trucks.

Are those type of vehicle suitable for jungle combat or should the PH Army consider an MRAP vehicle or at least the M1117 ASV as the V-150 Commando and Simba APC are not well-protected against IED, which are now being used by ASG, MILF/MNLF/BIFF and Communist renegades such as the NPA.

    The KM450 truck.

If you go to 2:20 in the video you cans see that the Germans are using the Weasel vehicle in the forest. When a firefight starts they are the only ones in the woods with armor. The Weasel would be very useful for the Philippines.

When it comes to IED protection the best options are some type of MRAP, the US might have some extra Maxxpro's left over from the war in Afghanistan but they are expensive to operate and are massive.

Possible Wiesel 1 AWC armed with 20mm as the M113A2 from Israel that are armed with 25mm autocannon (4 M113s) and 76mm gun (14 M113s) have not yet arrived, and even those will not replace the usual vehicles used in this type of operation - the Simba APC and V-150 Commando APCs.

As for MRAP, well that is the only issue, the price tag and the amount needed to operate.
