Duterte to hold talks on weaponry procurement, economic deals in China
    by People's Daily
    October 18, 2016 (updated)

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who arrives in Beijing on Oct. 18 for his first state visit to China, will hold talks with Chinese officials on multiple issues including weaponry purchases and economic cooperation, according to reports by Chinese media.

The president said in an interview with Phoenix TV that the recent joint military exercises between the Philippines and the U.S., which ended last week, will be the last set between the two countries while he is in office. Duterte also stated that the possibility remains for Philippines-China or Philippines-Russia military exercises.

Duterte refuted the claim that U.S.-Philippines military exercises could deepen military cooperation, instead calling them “a perfect opportunity to court death.”

“The U.S. gave us two aircraft without weapons,” said Duterte in an interview. “What we face in war are 3,000 aircraft from China’s People’s Liberation Army.” Duterte expressed his hope that China could offer weapons to the Philippines via loans and assistance. He also expects that China will support his country in combating terrorism.

Oh Ei Sun, a senior fellow with the Malaysia Program at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University, told People’s Daily Online that if China offers the right price, Duterte might even buy weapons from China, following the lead of many other Southeast Asian countries, which have diversified their weapons arsenals by purchasing weapons from Russia, China, France and other nations.

Duterte’s state visit, which will run from Oct. 18 to 21, comes at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. China is the first non-ASEAN country that Duterte has visited since he became president in July.

According to Oh, Duterte is not happy about the U.S. criticizing his anti-drug campaign, yet failing to provide substantial economic assistance.

“He has to look for alternatives, and China, with its humongous foreign investment capability, comes instantly to mind,” Oh added.

Before leaving Manila, Duterte highlighted economic and trade cooperation. In an interview with China News Service, Duterte said he hoped to consolidate business relations with China. He also stated that the Philippines needs capital and technology support from China to develop its industry. During his visit, a delegation of entrepreneurs from the Philippines will sign agreements with China, according to Duterte.

This choice of China instead of the U.S. as Duterte’s first non-ASEAN state visit is a demonstration to the U.S. of his independent mind. Nevertheless, the South China Sea issue still challenges Sino-Philippines relations.

Good idea, in my opinion. China make a normal weapon for little (usually) price. Of course, Russian weapon is best, but it cost more.

Honestly, I would prefer Russian-made weapons; it may be more expensive than the China-made weapons, but many in the world procure Russian-made weapons, from small arms to missile defense systems.

Thus, like the American-made weapons, many people and countries have confidence in Russian-made weapons.

It may be more expensive, but it is worth every penny.

Personal opinion, it is not good to be close to China if it meant severing ties with the US as it may compromise our position in regards to the territorial issues in SCS. The Chinese government may give aid and development to the Philippines, including modernization of the military, but given their aggressive policy in the SCS, we may unwittingly end up recognizing the SCS as "Chinese territory".

Duterte's foreign policy is not pragmatism, it is simply kicking out the US and letting the Chinese in.

It is your business, but imho, kicking our Yanks is very pragmatic doing. They are useless. They can not protect you. They will not fight against China for your interests in SCS.
BTW, what is your position about these islands in SCS? Do you think they are Phillipines, or they are nobodies? Why?

My position about the man-made islands in SCS? They are illegally made by China, though I don't expect the US will do anything since the issue is a rather "gray area" for many countries in terms of territorial policies and nobody wants a second Asia-Pacific war.

Not only about them. Also about natural islands Nansha (Spratly). And, you know, there are no such thing as "international law" (especially after NATO's agression against Serbia, Iraq, Lybia). "Might is right".
There are only treats and treaties.
Next moment - Chinies has builded islands, so they are their islands, aren't they?

So, Yanks can't help you to solve this problem. They will get your money, but they will not give you islands. China already have islands, and can give you money just for recognition of this fact.
You have to choose what deal is better.

They were formed supernaturally? They were build with magic? Its naturally to humans to live in the artificial enviroment.
But anyway, if I shall build house - it will be my house. If you will build island - it will be your island. China has build islands - so, they are China's islands, aren't they? What's a problem?
