The French army launched a tender in 2014 in order to evaluate and then choose a rifle to replace the Famas.
101.000 new assault rifles are planned to be bought over the coming years. The deal and the first order are planned for this year.

5 rifles were selected to compete in the tender.

Some of those guns have to be in the competition as token gestures, no way the VHS-2 or ARX-160 even had a chance.

    As for the HK416...

Works in both cold and hot climates, Afghan deserts or Norwegian forests:

    Short enough for urban combat:

Accurate enough for use on open waters:

And durable enough for use in non-traditional environments:

What other gun would you chose when you need to stare off mysteriously into the sunset?

Or keep the Russians from saving oppressed Russian minorities on your side of the border?

    No other gun, that's who.

    HK416 best!

I like the VHS-2 because it is a bulpup like the FAMAS, it would be easier for troops transition over to it without having to make too many adjustments. Bulpups are also better for CQB so it has that advantage as well. I do not know much about the rifle and its reliability but I am sure trials will sort out which rifle is the most reliable.

"Operations conducted in the Middle East and Africa have proven that the design works in real-world combat scenarios.”

“By all accounts, the VHS rifle is well liked by Croatian soldiers and civilian shooters in European nations that allow ownership of select-fire rifles.”

We do know that the SCAR and HK-416 are very reliable. Oh and I don't know if France should buy a Swiss rifle especially if it plans to invade it.

    It is the ;

FN Herstal FCU-1.5M Fire Control Unit

    fnhaa.jpg

Successful target engagement with 40mm LV tube-launched grenades requires precise range estimation to the target and launch at the exact elevation angle, while keeping correct azimuth aiming.

With the FN Fire Control Unit (FN FCU), the shooter can now rely on a light, compact and easily used device to significantly maximize first-round hit probability.

    The FN FCU consists of:
    - a laser range finder (LRF), which calculates the accurate distance between the shooter and the target
    - a clinometer, which measures the difference in elevation/depression between the target and the shooter
    - a ballistic computer, which calculates the angle of launch required depending on grenade type
    - a moving red reticle sight, which gives the correct aiming point
    - a weapon cant indicator, which indicates when weapon realignment is required.

Two models are available: the FN FCU-850N with a laser beam of 850nm and the FN FCU-1.5M with a laser beam of 1,550nm. Both offer similar aiming/firing capabilities and benefits, with the FN FCU-1.5M featuring a laser range finder undetectable with Night Vision Goggles.

The FN FCU can fit on any stand-alone or underslung grenade launcher featuring a top Picatinny rail.

    How were the competitors shortlisted?

Is it based on which weapon does better in each requirement, and then calculating an average? Or did the Army just provide a set of specifications, and all the guns that qualify those specs are accepted into the shortlist, and then whichever company bids for a lower overall contract price is selected?

There's no much information about the ongoing trials, but the chosen rifle would have to be reliable, resistant, modular and easy to integrate with the soldier system called Félin.
    -
The economical, but most importantly the political factor would be decisive concerning the choice. And the army's chief of staff is worried about this fact, that the rifle is chosen by the politicians for political reasons. He clearly said,he wants to have his say into the final choice so that 'our soldiers aren't imposed a rifle that I don't want'.

According to latest news,a rifle has already been selected as Famas' replacement (still unknown),but a group that lost the tender is already challenging the decision in front of an administrative court.
