The French navy detected a Russian submarine carrying nuclear missiles in the Bay of Biscay in January, Obs magazine reported on Thursday, citing a senior French official.

According to Obs, the submarine, from the Murmansk base, did not enter France's territorial waters, but was seen off France's Atlantic coast.

A spokesman for the French navy neither confirmed or denied the information saying it was a general policy not to communicate on such matters.

"Russian naval activity has been on the rise for several months, if not years, and we are permanently attentive to it," the spokesman said.

Russia has flexed its military muscle over the past couple of years, amid heightened tensions between the West and Moscow over Ukraine, and the NATO military alliance has repeatedly reported more incursions by Russian fighters and long-range bombers into its airspace.

In Britain and Sweden patrol planes have searched their waters over the past two years after the sighting of a submarine's periscope and reports of foreign "underwater activity".

In mid-February French and British fighter jets intercepted two Russian Tu-160 bomber planes heading toward British airspace near the French coast.

Anyone have a guess? I'm guessing Delta IV.

The Northern Fleet, in Murmansk, has a single Typhoon active - Dmitri Donskoi (TK-208):

And a single Borei - Yury Dolgorukiy (K-535)

    But has six Delta IVs.

im not sure which sub it is but what's certain is that they are testing NATO's readiness and submarine detection capabilities. Last year there was one snooping around Norway or Sweden I think and it got a lot of media attention because we couldn't find it. It was detected then never detected again.

The incident from last year was a bit of an embarrassment for Sweden, though they did actually find a submarine in their waters... it was just over 100 years old and sunk in 1916:D.

Funny though, from bomber flights near Alaska and the Baltics to probing European waters with submarines and tug boats... oh and that relic aircraft carrier that follows, they never seem to catch NATO sleeping. They test our readiness, and it always ends up the same:

The good news about it is that we can detect their submarines and show that we have good detection capabilities.
I won't be surprising if our submarines are also sometimes near or in russian waters, but the difference is that they don't detect us. If they did,be sure Sputnik would be talking about it during 100 years.

With the dumberer at the head of the white house, the new Stalin at the head of Russia, and the world in crisis we have, it's not that great to have those sort of news...
Everyone knows what happens when guys play with fire near the gun powder barils...
Thansk to De Gaulle, we have an independent detterent force which assure us a certain security. That prevails and works only if we have clever guy on top of strong countries...
