BERLIN --- Germany plans to develop a new fighter jet to replace Tornado jets in the long term and it aims to hold initial talks with European partners in 2016 about what features they want in the aircraft, according to a document seen by Reuters on Sunday.

A draft document from the Defence Ministry on 'military aviation strategy' said it was still unclear whether the new jet would be manned or unmanned. It said it was also possible that the jet would be designed for both options and then be flown with or without a pilot depending on the type of deployment.

Germany was offered the F-35 for a potential replacement on the Tornado, but it was denied and we decided to upgrade the Tornados until an available jet comes out.

that's what our goal is a domestic jet or working among another European nation for a jet. Sweden's developing a jet called "Fly System 2020" and i believe that is what we may acquire in the long run.

Germany is working with Airbus defence to create Future Combat Air System. It will enter service around 2030-2040. The FCAS is intended to replace the Tornado aircraft currently in service with the Luftwaffe.
