The commander said that it is the oldest tank in our inventory but it can still move and fire and is in good shape. :banging table:

The tank has day time and thermal sights

Theoretically either tank can still be used to day if they are given modern electro optics, fire control system, and an APS. Whats the difference between an 8x8 and an M-48 if they both have upgraded fire control systems? Both can be taken out out by an ATGM. Wheeled vehicles are quite though.

If you will add also reactive armour, systems of active defence (like "Arena" or "Afganit"), some anti-radiation linings, it will be difficult to kill this tank even with ATGM. But "protection" is only one of main characteristics. Other - "mobility" and "fire power" are valuable to the same extent.
And modernization of old tanks can be costly thing. To build (or buy) new tanks can be cheaper.

Thats true, those tanks have very bad gas mileage and are not very fast however what I noticed from combat footage from the Middle East is that most tanks are being used in a stationary fashion probably because they are not facing other tanks.

I don't think M-48's or anything older are worth upgrading, only something like T-72 and M-60 are worth it.
