Iran to buy Russian T-90 tanks

Commander of the Iranian Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan told local reporters on Wednesday that Iran and Russia have established firm ties in the field of military equipment supply, adding Russia has started delivering the S-300 missile defense system to Iran a few days.

He added that Iran has also on agenda the purchase of Russian T-90 battle tanks, saying ‘given the expansion of ties between the two counties, we will certainly increase our military purchases from Russia.”

Pourdastan added that Russian officials will make trips to Iran in the near future and Iranian experts will also visit Russia to sign a number of related contracts.

The lifting of sanctions on Iran happened at exactly the right time for Russia. Russian defense exports to India have faltered recently because of the US getting a bigger piece of the pie of the Indian military hardware market, and Iran picked up the slack.

Now Iran is going crazy buying all this Russian Hardware. S-300s, T-90s, and probably much more.

Iran is interested in acquiring Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30 Flankers for its air force. An Iranian delegation discussed the matter with Russian officials at the MAKS airshow outside Moscow last month, according to Iranian state media.

“We are discussing the purchase of Sukhoi fighter planes,” Iranian defense minister Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan told the Lebanon-based al-Mayadeen news network according to Iran’s Press TV on Aug. 30.

The Lieutenant of Iran’s ground forces, Brigadier General Heydari Kiyumars, also announced that Iran plans to purchase T-90 tanks as “the T-90 tank possesses better combat characteristics and meets all the requirements we apply to modern armor,” online publication, Defense Talk, reported.

The general further added that, “Iran wants to take over the tank production technology along with its purchase,” noting that the Iranian Army cannot acquire military equipment without importing the technology pertaining to its production.

Earlier, it had been reported that Iran will develop its own tank instead of purchasing the Russian T-90.

The wish to produce tanks domestically possibly comes from Iran’s experience under sanctions and arms embargoes, which have at times severely hindered Tehran’s ability to improve its military, the publication noted.

It was earlier reported that during an official visit to Moscow, Iran’s Minister of Defense, Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan discussed a number of concrete proposals to expand Iran’s military cooperation with Russia.
