During a recent television interview, Iran’s Defense Minister, General Hossein Dehqhan, announced that Iran will sign a contract with Russia for the co-production of an undisclosed number of Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30 multirole fighter aircraft, Fars News Agency reports.

Earlier, the Iranian Mehr News Agency had quoted Dehghan—who appeared on Iranian state TV—saying that Tehran needs to focus on modernizing its air force. To that end, Dehghan specifically cited the Su-30—but he did not indicate which version of Russian-built jet Tehran is interested in. “Today we need to pay attention to air force and aircraft and we seek to seal a deal with the Russians upon which we will have partnership in the construction and manufacturing of the jet fighter,” Dehghan said.

That's interesting. Just recently at the Singapore Airshow UAC unveiled the Su-30SME. Maybe this is the variant they are talking about?

Regular Russian Forces use the Su-30SM, so I think the extra "E" designates it as an export variant.

The Iranians are buying Russian gear left and right. Its only a matter of time before they get their hands on the PAK-FA.

Yes the E is maybe for export, they never give the top gear to other countries. If Iran gets more than 100 SU-30 then it will change the thinking of regional countries and their procurement plan. Imagine if they had those jets now and were putting pressure on Turkey or Saudi Arabia with Russia.

We are spending $22 billion a year on military budget excluding secret funds, I think with Iran sanctions lifted we need to spend $30 billion. Some Turks are saying that we need to get F-15 or Eurofighters.
With critical platforms like this it is dangerous to rely only on an indigenous jet fighter. We should try to make our own but at the same time try to get a 4.5 generation fighter. I think new F-15 models are in that category. F-35 needs to come fast too. I can tell you that we are worried with recent developments because our procurement process is historically very slow, we can not take things slow anymore.
