Abu Sayyaf eyeing Central Mindanao as IS caliphate—Lorenzana
    By: Frances Mangosing - Reporter / @FMangosingINQ

The Abu Sayyaf is considering Central Mindanao as one of the possible areas to establish a caliphate of the Islamic State (IS), also known as ISIS, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana revealed.

In a press briefing on Thursday, he said that the IS leadership has directly communicated with Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon for him to find a caliphate (wilayat or province) in the Philippines.

“Meron silang contact ngayon and in fact one of the leaders in Basilan, Isnilon Hapilon, he moved to Central Mindanao allegedly, on the behest of the ISIS people in Middle East to find out if ‘yung Central Mindanao is conducive to the establishment of an organization, yung ISIS nila,” Lorenzana told reporters.

Based on intelligence reports, Basilan and Jolo in Southern Mindanao are too small for the IS to set up a caliphate there.

“Madali silang maipit dun eh. They are looking for a bigger area so ang nangyari ngayon, nandun si Isnilon trying to rally the Maute to support the ISIS or to become part of the ISIS,” Lorenzana said.

Hapilon reportedly brought a small group of men with him to Central Mindanao but most of his men are still in Basilan.

“I think he went there just to see the area to find out if it is conducive for them to move there and establish what you call the caliphate. Fortunately, we find out that he is there so we are pursuing him there in Butig,” the defense chief said.

Military offensive vs terror groups starts anew in Lanao del Sur town
    Chiara Zambrano, ABS-CBN News

Government forces have begun launching a military offensive against various terror groups in Butig municipality, Lanao del Sur.

Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, chief of the AFP's public affairs office, said the military’s Western Mindanao Command had another “major breakthrough” in its intensified campaign against terror groups Abu Sayyaf and Maute, as well as foreign terror factions in the area.

The military on Thursday night launched a surgical air strike against terror groups. Two new FA-50 lead-in jets dropped bombs in Butig, which was followed by an airplane and an attack helicopter.

The operation was launched after the military received information that Abu Sayyaf senior leader Isnilon Hapilon is in Butig and is now the recognized “emir,” or leader, of the Islamic State group in the Philippines.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Thursday confirmed that the Islamic State now has direct contact to Hapilon for a caliphate in the country.

“Hapilon Isnilon, he moved to Central Mindanao allegedly on the behest of the ISIS people in the Middle East to find out if 'yung Central Mindanao is more conducive to the establishment of an organization because, according to the report, Basilan and Jolo are too small. Madali silang maipit doon, so they are looking for a bigger area,” Lorenzana said in a press briefing Thursday.

China has been holding anti-terror exercises with central asian states, I wonder if they will do so in the Philippines.

That would depend on Duterte if he will agree to an idea of anti-terror exercises with China.
