Israel Carries out Military Strike in Syria, Notorious Samir Kantar Killed

A militant allied with Hezbollah who led one of the most infamous attacks in Israel’s history died in an alleged Israeli strike in a Damascus suburb, the Lebanese militant group and Syrian state television said Sunday.

Israeli warplanes carried out the strike on Samir Kantar in an apartment building Saturday night in Jaramana city, outside the Syrian capital, Hezbollah said in a statement.

Rockets were fired into Israel from southern Lebanon on Sunday evening, hours after a suspected Israeli air strike inside Syria killed a leading militant figure, ratcheting up tensions in the volatile border area where the three countries meet.

In January, an Israeli strike in Syria killed six members of Hezbollah, including a commander and the son of the group's late military leader Imad Moughniyah in the province of Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

What is going on with Syria's air defenses? Back in January they got attacked and now again? As far as I know the Israelis don't have any advanced stealth technology, are they always flying under the radar so to speak? Is Syria intentionally not shooting down Israeli jets or are the Israelis able to evade the S-300? Afterall they did hold a training exercise with earlier this month where they had access to the S-300 as Greece is an operator of this system.

Where do the Russians play into this spiel?

According to Ron Ben Yishai an Israeli War Correspondent-Journalist the Israelis are likely to have trained extensively with the S-300 in Greece and thus know the ins and the outs of the system. He says that it is safe to assume that they may have even developed technologies to help defeat the system. By taking those opinions into account it is highly plausible that the israelis were able to penetrate Syrian airspace and carry out the strike without Syrian knowledge or consent.

According to this article that is not the case:

With regard to flying under the radar:

Has anyone confirmed what missile the Russian batteries are using? The range of S-400 is often cited as its maximum of 400km, but unless the Russian's actually brought the 40N6 the range is less than that.

That is one big missile though.

No matter the missile, the radar is still one of the best the Russian's offer. But all electronic systems have blind spots, the US and Israel are the world's best at exploiting them - through (D)SEAD, electronic warfare or exploiting the physics behind radar emissions to approach in coverage dead-zones.

Good missile system, but nothing too great. All Russian missiles are said to be invincible... until Israel proves otherwise.

Given the strike hit a Hezbollah personnel, a member of a faction allied to the SAA, I can't image a green-light was given by Damascus.

Do they have S-400's deployed around Damascus? I thought they only had them deployed at their airbase around Latakia in North Western Syria near Turkey. Either way the Russian and the Israelis had a deal on military coordination in Syria. I am not sure of the extent of this deal but it would not surprise me if the Russians agreed to allow Israeli planes into Syria.
