Japan’s Military to Get New Assault Amphibious Vehicles

The Japanese Ministry of Defense has awarded BAE Systems a contract to produce 30 Assault Amphibious Vehicles (AAV) 7 for the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), according to a April 7 BAE Systems press release. The defense contractor will provide “30 new AAV7A1 Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability/Rebuild to Standard (RAM/RS) vehicles, plus supply tools and test equipment to support maintenance,” the press release states. In addition, BAE Systems will offer training aids for the vehicles to the JGSDF.

“We’re proud to support the Japanese military’s recapitalization by providing this enhanced amphibious capability,” said a BAE Systems’ representative. “As the original equipment manufacturer of the AAV fleet, we have a strong history of supporting this platform.”

"The legality of having amphibious vehicles — which are generally considered offensive-oriented — is an issue in Japan. According to the Sankei Shimbun the government was never in favor of buying the vehicles. It quoted an official in the Ministry of Defense as saying that although elements of the public believe there is no reason to have such vehicles, if one works under the assumption that the islands were seized, then amphibious landing craft are indispensable."

I never imagined that the AAVP-7 can be equipped with a remote-operated autocannon.

That addition actually makes it really effective, great fire support when making a beach landing.
