TOKYO — Japan’s emperor said Tuesday that his nation must remember the tremendous loss of life in the Philippines during World War II, as he and his wife Empress Michiko embarked for a four-day visit to the Southeast Asian country.

“Many Filipinos, Americans and Japanese lost their lives in the Philippines during the war,” Emperor Akihito said in a short statement before departing from Tokyo. “Especially in the battle in Manila, a tremendously large number of innocent Filipino civilians were victims. Upon making this visit, we need to bear this in mind at all times.”

"Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement that the Philippines is "deeply honored" to welcome the imperial couple.

"Their visit underscores the abiding friendship between the Japanese and Filipino people," said Coloma. "As our country charts the path that leads to sustainable, inclusive growth we are fortunate that Japan is our steadfast partner and ally.""

What does the average Filipino think about Japan? Have Filipinos forgiven them for WW2?

The old generation (the ones that lived and survived WW2) still harbor resentment towards the Japanese whereas those who were born after WW2, specially the youth have no resentment or hatred towards Japan though the general view is that Filipinos have forgiven the Japanese and have positive attitude towards them.

The only exception are the Sinophile Filipinos like certain people in a certain forum.

Sometimes I wish we had still Ottoman family with ceremonial role, but then we have the cost of maintaining them. They could have been used as a good show piece to promote Turkey for other Muslim countries. The sultan would still be symbolic head of Islamic world. No point discussing, this is history and off topic.
You have better mentallity then our neighbors. They still hate use after our empire times, even if we didn't do much bad things to them.

However, being forgiving is also one of our faults and I, in a sense, kinda resent that kind of mentality because we Filipinos might even forgive the Chinese if they "hammer down" us in a conflict.
