Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade ‘to be ready next year’

A new joint Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade will be operational next year, Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz said on Monday.

During a ceremony in Lublin, eastern Poland, to mark the launch of the brigade, which is ultimately to comprise 4,000 soldiers, Macierewicz said the unit would take part in UN peacekeeping missions.

But in an apparent reference to Russia, Poland’s giant neighbour to the east, he added the brigade “is a very clear signal to anyone who would want to disturb peace in Europe.”

“There’s a very good chance, even bordering on certainty, that this brigade will reach operational readiness next year,” Macierewicz added in Lublin after meeting his Ukrainian and Lithuanian counterparts.

The Brigade is important for regional security and Ukraines efforts to meet NATO standards.

"The establishment of a joint military formation indicates a high level of mutual trust and cooperation between our countries. LitPolUkrBrig will be an important factor in the regional security at the military level. At the moment, the matter of building the defense capabilities is a priority for our country. The level of security of Ukraine depends on the effective solution of this issue," Poltorak said during a meeting with Minister of National Defense of Poland Antoni Macierewicz and Minister of National Defense of Lithuania Juozas Olekas on Monday.

"The participation of Ukrainian troops in the activities of the brigade headquarters provides an important opportunity to bring the training of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to NATO standards
