NATO leaders have agreed to deploy military forces to the Baltic states and eastern Poland for the first time and increase air and sea patrols to reassure allies following Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.

The 28-nation Western defence alliance decided to move four battalions — totalling 3,000 to 4,000 troops in north-eastern Europe on a rotating basis — to display its readiness to defend eastern members against any Russian aggression.

"These battalions will be robust and they will be multinational," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.

"They make clear that an attack on one ally will be considered an attack on the whole alliance."

Mr Stoltenberg said the deployment was not aimed at threatening or isolating Russia.

"We do not want a new Cold War, we do not want a new arms race and we do not want confrontation," he said.

"As we strengthen our deterrents and defence we continue to seek a constructive dialogue with Russia."

President Barack Obama said the United States would deploy about 1,000 soldiers in Poland under the plan.

He said the troops would serve "shoulder to shoulder" with Polish forces, and enhance the US forward presence in central and eastern Europe.

They are expected to conduct frequent training missions and will be "mechanised", meaning they would have regular infantry equipment including armoured personnel carriers.

Mr Obama did not provide details on where the US troops comprising the NATO battalion would come from.

Germany will lead the battalion in Lithuania, Britain in Estonia and Canada in Latvia.

Other nations such as France will supply troops.

Host nation Poland set a tone of mistrust of Russian intentions.

"We have to reject any type of wishful thinking with regard to pragmatic cooperation with Russia as long as it keeps on invading its neighbours," Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski told a pre-summit forum.

Mr Obama called for dialogue with Russia, but he too urged allies to keep sanctions on Moscow in place until it fully complies with a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO but President Petro Poroshenko will meet allied leaders on Saturday, where he may face pressure to fulfil Kiev's part of the agreement by accepting more decentralisation and local elections in the rebel-held eastern Donbass region.

France will contribute by sending a company to the baltic countries (150-200 soldiers) and only 6 months a year. As for the equipments,it will depend on which regiment will provide this company. According to me,this is more a symbolic presence than anything else,we have lost interest and have little enthusiasm in this part of the world for some reasons, but still want to fulfill our commitments toward our allies.

There were Yanks soldiers in Georgia in 2008. They just presented us some interesting equipment, and flew away. I'm sure, that in the case of conflict euroforces will flew or annihilated.
