North Korea launches missile from submarine, South Korea says

North Korea has fired what is believed to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said Saturday.

The missile was fired at 6:30 p.m. local time (5:30 a.m. ET), South Korean officials said, and appears to have flown for about 30 km (about 19 miles) -- well short of the 300 km (roughly 186 miles) that would be considered a successful test.
One U.S. official said Saturday the launch "was provocative but not a threat to the U.S. and the missile was fired away from South Korea and Japan." But another U.S. official noted that after previous launch attempts by Pyongyang that didn't appear to be successful, this one seems to have gone much better.
"North Korea's sub launch capability has gone from a joke to something very serious," this official said. "The U.S. is watching this very closely."

In the short term this isn't a threat but if they could test one that had a range of 300 or 400 km's then it's serious. Japan would be under serious threat. North Korean Subs don't have enough range to reach the US so we are safe until they develop better subs.

The North's official news agency KCNA said the test-firing was "another great success," without disclosing the date and place of the launch, which it said was guided by leader Kim.

"The successful test-fire would help remarkably bolster the underwater operational capability of the KPA navy, he said, adding that it is now capable of hitting the heads of the South Korean puppet forces and the U.S. imperialists any time as it pleases," it said, citing Kim. KPA refers to the North's military.

US Strategic Command has confirmed it identified and tracked an "object" that posed no threat to the US. So the missile's real. The question now is what fired it?

The IN uses submerged barges to test SLBMs and Sub-launched cruise missiles, so that's a possibility:

Reports on North Korea's earlier SLBM tests indicate their submarine was heavily damaged following a launch.

And they never will be a submarine threat against the US from the DPRK. Their tech is ancient, a couple of submarine launched fireworks won't scare US but the South and Japan should be very worried. As you already said they just need a sub launched missile with a few hundred kilometer range but I don't think subs would be a good delivery mechanism for them. They are too easy to detect and the missiles can be shot down too. I think they are better off with ground based ballistic missiles, they have ones that have plenty of range already.

    North Korea submarine missile launch
"The new submarine has a length of 67 meters, draft of 6.6 meters and a displacement of about 3,000 tons", - said the source. Experts believe that the engineers in Korea finalized import Soviet submarine class Golf II, built in 1958 and decommissioned in 1990.Again, Russia and Putin is not to blame?

"Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA) Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, guided on the spot the underwater test-fire of strategic submarine ballistic missile. At the observation post he was briefed on the plan for the test-fire and gave an order for it. As soon as the order was issued, the submarine submerged as low as the maximum depth of waters for launching and fired the ballistic missile. The test-fire was aimed to confirm the stability of the underwater ballistic launching system in the maximum depth of waters, flying kinetic feature under the vertical flight system of the ballistic missile powered by the newly developed high power solid fuel engine, the reliability of the phased heat separation and the working accuracy of nuclear detonating device of warhead at the preset altitude. It fully confirmed and reinforced the reliability of the Korean-style underwater launching system and perfectly met all technical requirements for carrying out the Juche-based underwater attack operation. He noted with great satisfaction that Juche Korea had access to one more means for powerful nuclear attack as required by the strategic intention of the Party Central Committee. He highly praised the officials, scientists and technicians in the field of national defence science and munitions factories for having successfully rounded off the technology of underwater launching of ballistic missile from a strategic submarine at a higher level. The successful test-fire would help remarkably bolster up the underwater operational capability of the KPA navy, he said, adding that it is now capable of hitting the heads of the south Korean puppet forces and the U.S. imperialists anytime as it pleases. This eye-opening success constitutes one more precious labor gift the defence scientists and technicians are presenting to the great leaders and the motherly Party. He called on the reliable defence scientists and technicians to uphold through scientific practices the Party's strategic intention to react to nuclear weapons in kind. He urged them to step up the project for bolstering the nuclear force to mount nuclear attacks on the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean puppet group of traitors any time when the Party is determined to do. He had a photo session with the defence scientists and service personnel of the navy who took part in the test-fire in celebration of the successful day."
