Russia unveils updated version of BMD-4M2 airborne assault vehicle

The joint stock company “Kurganmashzavod, one of the leaders of the Russian military industrial complex, has displayed the new version of BMD-4 airborne combat vehicle with “Sinica” (in Russian – tits constitute the family of small passerine birds ) turret.

    That was reported by rg.ru.

The new updated version of airborne combat vehicle called BMD-4M2. The main peculiarity of BMD-4M2 is that the original power unit and driving gear are changed to standard one, used for BMP-3. It helps to decrease the time of airborne assault vehicle servicing in the army and decrease the price of production within government defence odder of Russian Federation Military Department.

The BMD-4M2 fitted with a version of a “Sinica” manned turret. The Sinica turret is fundamentally different from previous models in that it has a panoramic sight with a thermal imaging channel.

The BMD-4M2 is also fully amphibious with two water jets mounted on each side of the back of the hull and can swim at speeds of up to 10 km/h.

This is one arena where Russia simply outclasses European and North American militaries without doubt. France might be in the best position to challenge Russia with light airborne cavalry, but I don't believe they have any vehicles that can be airdropped either. The ERC 90 is light enough at 8 tons, and packs a heavy armament with a 90mm gun. Air mobile, but perhaps not able to be air dropped.

Other then that the American Stryker Mobile Gun System is likely the only heavily armed vehicle able to be airdropped in a ready configuration.

Russia dramatically outclasses its NATO counterparts in deployable airborne capabilities and it's one area neither the Americans nor Europeans seem all too interested in rectifying, which is worrisome.
