Russian ambassador to Turkey dies after gun attack in Ankara – Foreign Ministry

The Russian ambassador to Turkey has died after being shot by a gunman in Ankara, where he was attending a photo exhibition, the Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed.
“This is a tragic day in the history of Russian diplomacy. Today, Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov died after being shot at during a public event in Ankara,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Monday evening.

The assault on the Russian ambassador is an “act of terrorism,” she added.

The ambassador, Andrey Karlov, was shot after he was about to deliver a speech on the opening of the exhibition “Russia in the eyes of Turks.”

Photos purportedly showing the perpetrator bearing a firearm are now increasingly circulating on social media. Users are also posting pictures which they say show the Russian ambassador lying on the ground after having been shot.

The perpetrator, who was wearing a suit and a tie, shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (‘God is great’ in Arabic) during the attack, AP reports, citing their own photographer.

The attacker also said several words in Russian, according to the news agency, and damaged several of the photos at the expo.

Turkish NTV broadcaster says that three other people were also injured in the attack on the ambassador.

The attacker has been killed by Turkish Special Forces, Turkish Anadolu news agency reports. Russian Interfax news agency, citing a source in the Turkish military, also confirms that the gunman was neutralized.

Hurriyet newspaper, citing their own reporter, says that the perpetrator also fired warning shots in the air before targeting Karlov.

The attacker reportedly identified himself as a police officer as he entered the exhibition, a Turkish military source told Interfax.

“We have information, from one of the witnesses, that the attacker presented himself as a police officer, showing the relevant ID at the entrance. This information is being checked right now,” the source is quoted as saying.

Reacting to the assault on the Russian ambassador, the US State Department expressed its condemnation.

“We condemn this act of violence, whatever its source. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” State Department spokesperson John Kirby, wrote on his official Twitter account.

Attack on the ambassador is not just "act of terrorism", it is an attack on the state. "Casus belli", you know. First of all, we need answers for our questions. May be, it is a first blood in XIII Russia-Turkish war.

Hold up. That's what some people want.
People interested in derailing Turkish-Russian relations are behind this.

Turkey and Russia have been approving many agreements lately, I don't think it's anything from us.

Something suspicious is going on with this one, I don't take the outside look of it to make assessments.

It could be a genuine terror attack but it could also be a state backed assaasination. Turkish and Russian intelligence will find out.

here is what i don't understand many people are saying he was a law enforcement officer of Turkey and now is chanting "Allah Akbar" i wonder what will happen to our relations if it will decrease or not and why all of a sudden would a "cop" cry about Aleppo? I thought cops were to arrest and bring terrorists to justice not support them

What i dont understand is,where was his security, how can an ambassador not have security with him?
They will say that the assailant was a Gulenist, something is fishy here, they want to disturb the Turkish-Russian relations.
Im sure Putin and Erdogan have talked about it and know what to do.

We had a cop go nuts in 2013 out west in California.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Dorner_shootings_and_manhunt

We also had a military veteran who started shooting police officers.

Main point is that these things can happen.

I will delve into a conspiracy theory. It could be the Iranians who are behind this. It would benefit them to derail the Syrian peace talks as they have not achieved all of their objectives in Syria yet whereas Russia has. Iran wouldn't like to see Turkey get too close to Russia either, they need Turkey to be isolated in the western camp.

Assailant who killed Russian envoy suspected to be Gülenist as new evidence surfaces

With Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş identified as the assailant who killed the Russian envoy Andrey Lavrov late Monday, all eyes have turned to the Gülenist terror cult (FETÖ) as new evidence surfaced.

A document issued by the Diyarbakır Governorate shows that Altıntaş took 2 days of annual leave between July 16 and 18, right after the July 15 coup attempt, which was perpetrated by Gülenist militants embedded in the ranks of Turkish military. Previous documents seized during raids had shown that the terrorist group had originally planned to carry out the coup on July 16 but after learning that Turkish intelligence had received tip-offs on such an attempt, Gülenist generals had decided to carry out their plan to overthrow the government a day ahead of their schedule.

The home address written in the official document above is also the Turkish address of Abdullah Bozkurt, a high-ranking Gülenist militant currently living in the U.S. and the former Ankara correspondent of now-closed newspaper Today's Zaman. The newspaper was regarded as the mouthpiece of the terrorist cult.

The third grade police commissioner who signed this document, Kahraman Sezer is now also in jail for his links to FETÖ. After the July 15 coup attempt, he was expelled from the Turkish police force during initial investigations. He was later arrested on accounts of "being a member of a terrorist organization". Even though taking annual leave was banned at the time, the document is proof of Sezer's permission to Altıntaş, going against government orders. Every member of the security forces, military, police force and others had been called to duty immediately because of the extraordinary situation.

The fact that the assailant also studied in a Gülen-linked prep school in his hometown Söke, a district of western Aydın province, also strengthens suspicions that he was involved with Gülen. Altıntaş was indicted by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office in the 2012 exam fraud case. As a student at Körfez Schools, a Gülenist prep school, he was found to have acquired the answers to the university entrance exam questions, and was admitted to the police college thanks to the Gülenist leak.

Turkey, Russia agree killing of envoy is provocation: Erdoğan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has extended his condolences over the assassination of Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov, adding that Ankara and Moscow agree that the killing was an attempt of provocation against mutual ties.

"We agree with (Vladimir) Putin that this is a provocation, there is no split of opinion about this”, Erdoğan said in a televised statement, while commenting on a phone call with the Russian leader.

“In this phone call tonight, we agreed on empowering our solidarity,” Erdoğan said adding that the two countries have the will not to let this provocation work.

The president also highlighted an increasing cooperation between the two countries, which resulted in the recent evacuation of civilians from the civil war-hit Aleppo in Syria. “This cooperation will continue in determination,” he said.

The attack is not only against the Russian envoy, but the Turkish nation, he said.
