The South China Sea arbitral tribunal, which was established under the unilateral request of the Philippines, announced on Wednesday that it will deliver the so-called “final verdict”.

The idea for the arbitration is that if the Philippine government is going to engage China in a bilateral talks, the Philippines can have leverage in such talks as the decision of the tribunal would declare that China's 9-dash line is illegal because going through a bilateral talks with China without any form of counterweight (like the tribunal arbitration decision if it is in favor the Philippines) will force the Philippine government to confirm on what China wants, and that is for the PH government to declare that sea area is China's sovereign territory.
