A bomb attack in New York City was a terrorist act, officials say, but no links have been found to global groups and the motivation remains unclear.

"Was it a political motivation? A personal motivation? We do not know," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Saturday night's blast in Manhattan injured 29 people. They have all now been released from hospital.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo said: "Whoever placed these bombs - we will find them and they will be brought to justice."

A second device - reportedly a pressure cooker attached to wiring and a mobile phone - had been found four blocks from the site of the explosion in the Chelsea district and was removed safely.

How do you stop something like this? Without descending into a surveillance happy, "police-on-every-corner", paranoid police state, there's so little that can be done.

You can't watch every social media post for the one threat that's real, you can't monitor every phone call or text message for suspicious crumbs (not legally anyway) and you can't keep the whole population under an all-seeing eye without garnering complaints about privacy.

These guys (mainly from Saudi Arabia) opened up schools everywhere polluting peoples minds with Salafi ideology. The Salafi ideology doesn't take into account hundreds of scholars who have way done extremely delicate research on all islamic topics and issues using proper methodology laid out our by our Prophet. They also have very limited knowledge of hadith and other topics in general even though they act as if they know.

Most of these terrorists are losers who failed in life and now try to act like some kind of self imagined super man where they imagine they are "saving the ummah" and "fighting for islam". These idiots are just causing damage and destroying our countries while others laugh. We already have pre warning about these guys since time of the prophet, we will beat these guys but as technofox mentioned its not easy.

Traces of Tannerite found at NY blast site, material widely available in US, Canada

Tannerite is a binary explosive used for target practice. It comes as two powders, which are mixed together just before use. (Tannerite)

The discovery of Tannerite in the improvised bomb that injured 29 people on Saturday in New York is focusing attention on a brand-name explosive that is widely available in Canada and the U.S.

On Sunday, a federal law enforcement official said the Chelsea bomb contained a residue of Tannerite, an explosive often used for target practice that can be picked up in many sporting goods stores. The discovery of may be important, as authorities probe the source of the bomb.

Tannerite is a binary explosive, meaning it is created by mixing two powders — ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder — in a combination the manufacturer says is patented..

    Rifle shot needed to detonate

Both these substances are safe and stable by themselves. They are only explosive when mixed together. When Tannerite is shipped or purchased, the powders are separate and only mixed together just before use.

Tannerite is used to create an exploding target in shooting practice, showing the shooter whether the target has been hit at long range.

Tannerite detonations only occur when the target is hit with a bullet at high velocity, producing a large explosion and cloud of water vapour, according to the manufacturer's website.

The makers recommend a bullet travelling at 600 metres per second or more to detonate the target.

It is not yet known how the explosion on 23rd street in New York on Saturday was detonated. No traces of Tannerite were found at the site of the blast in New Jersey.

Cellphones were found at the site, but Tannerite cannot be detonated with a fuse unless the explosive is altered in some way, according to the manufacturer.

    Widely available in Canada, U.S.

The product, available since about 2000 in the U.S., is widely available in sporting goods shops throughout the U.S. and both online and in retail shops in Canada. It is legal, though there are restrictions on where it can be used.

The Tannerite manufacturer's site says Canadians must have an explosive importation permit from Natural Resources Canada before the company can ship to Canada. But there are Canadian retailers who carry the product.

Tannerite is supposed to be mixed in small amounts — about half a kilogram to a kilo at a time — and the manufacturer recommends standing at least 90 metres from the target when shooting.

The manufacturer also recommends against having other debris or material near the explosive as it is shot.

The product comes with warnings it is dangerous if misused. An expert told Associated Press that a lot of Tannerite would have to be used to cause an explosion the size of the one in New York.

However, YouTube videos show enthusiasts using much more than the recommended amounts, with both automobiles and a barn blown up with large amounts of the binary explosive.

New York bombing suspect captured in police shootout

    7860064-3x2-700x467.jpg

The man suspected of carrying out the New York City bombing that injured 29 people and planting other devices in New York and New Jersey has been arrested after a gun battle.

    Key points:
    • Suspect sustains gunshot injuries in shootout
    • Two officers shot but not believed to have life-threatening injuries
    • Five other suspects taken into custody then released without charge
    • New York Mayor says authorities not searching for anyone else
Two law enforcement officers were injured in the gunfight, as was Ahmad Khan Rahami, a 28-year-old Afghanistan-born US citizen who lives in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to a local hospital following his capture in Linden, New Jersey, about 32 kilometres outside New York.

The attacks came as world leaders prepared to gather at the United Nations in New York for the annual General Assembly this week, just days after the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Exactly, one of the reasons for the growth of terrorist groups is illiteracy and lack of awareness. Also unfortunately some countries create & support terrorist groups to achieve their goal.

In addition to Salafi, Wahhabism has also being feeding Islamophobia in the West, just like the war in Iraq has been feeding anti-Americanism, or the regressive and unjust policies of Netanyahu towards Palestine is feeding anti-Semitism.

I've studied Islam and Koran, however, If someone does not accept Islam, Islam has no enmity with him unless he proceeded to enmity and war against the Muslims. Nowhere in the Koran is not stated that you are right to insult other religions or drag followers of other religions. But unfortunately, radical Islamist groups and terrorist groups like ISIS with distortion of Koran and Islam do the greatest crimes such as sexual jihad, killing innocent people and children, the capture of women etc.

Unfortunately the ideas of Islamist extremist groups like Salafi and wahabism is sponsored globally by Saudi Arabia and this ideology is used to justify the violent acts of Jihadi Salafi groups like al qaede, ISIS.
