These are ports and countries where China has port use agreements, the seem to be well set to expand their influence in the African Sub Continent via east africa.

I think West Africa is still under firm French control due to the historical economic, linguistic, and military relationships between west Africa and France. The French can offer governments that are friendly towards France guarantees of power. The French can use their military to do this.

The US still has significant influence in Africa because of our aid contributions and military relations. As fas economic relations go I don't think we can compare with the types of deals the Chinese are offering. The one thing the Chinese are missing is a military element in Africa that compares to France and the US. They do have a lot of peacekeepers on the ground but the influence they have is limited until China can carry out more serious military operations in Africa. Their base in Djibouti is a good start. I don't they think they are very interested in West Africa rather they are interested in stable east Africa.

These are ports and countries where China has port use agreements, they seem to be well set to expand their influence in the African Sub Continent via east africa.

Our imports from Africa are down but our exports there are going up, thats a good sign.

The map with it's "string of pearls" connotations makes me nervous. Though the influence is somewhat countered by overlapping presence in Maldives and Oman ports (military component), Srilanka, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, Myanmar ports (economic component). Gwadar being the only significant issue of concern. The same applies for US as it has overlapping presence in most of the ports.
