    The Soviets had advanced knowledge of the Manhattan project. When Stalin was told about it by his US allies he was not surprised as he already knew about the project thanks to Soviet espionage efforts. The Soviets were able to develop their nuclear program swiftly thanks to Soviet spies working in top secret American, Canadian, and British nuclear labs. Eventually the Soviets tested their first atomic weapon in 1949, it was a near copy of the first nuclear bomb developed by the US.
