First F-35 is supposed to be delivered to Turkey in 2018. Maltaya Erhaç base is being prepared for the arrival of F-35. Preparation will take like 2 years. The 172nd Squadron will fly the F-35 from this base. That 172nd was closed for short time because the classic F-4's was retired. Turkish Air force plans to replace all F-4's with the F-35. F-16's will stay in operation longer and many will be replaced with indigenous TF-X fighter. F-35 Simulators were bought for the base.

If Turkey is using the F-35 to replace the F-4 does that mean that it has bad dog fighting capabilities? Isn't the F-35 supposed to be an F-16 replacement?

That doesn't imply that the F-35 sucks. They are replacing an obsolete aircraft with the F-35 and bringing back a disbanded squadron to fly it. They don't need to replace their F-16's because they are still one of the best Fighter Jets in the air today. As a matter of fact we plan to field F-16's for a few more decades. The F-35's will give them a lot of enhanced capabilities. The 5th Generation F-35 collects heaps of information with all of its shiny sensors and what not. This info will be shared with the 4th generation fighters and relayed to the appropriate decision makers.

The F-35 is our next generation fighter and will eventually replace the F-16 but it is very expensive to do so, thus it will be around for a while as planned. It will be equally expensive for Russia and China to replace their 4th generation fighters with 5th generation fighters.

The F-35 is never meant for dog fighting, only as a replacement for the F-4's of the Turkish Airforce.
As you know,we have a TFX project for air superiority,if ever needed, because the BVR range of 5th gen fighters like the F-35 will make that no longer necessary(me thinks).

I disagree I think that dogfights and wvr aerial combat is still relevant and will be for a long time to come. Who knows where EW will go. All of those flashy targeting lasers and radar guided BVR missiles could be jammed deeming them useless. If that happens then a fighter that isn't a good dog fighter is history. Some people will find it humorous and Ironic to see the F-35 replacing the F-4 because they say that the F-35 is like the F-4 in design concept and or vision.

Written by an F-35 pilot in a press release: The F-35's technology is designed to engage, shoot, and kill its enemy from long distances, not necessarily in visual "dogfighting" situations. There have been numerous occasions where a four-ship of F-35s has engaged a four-ship of F-16s in simulated combat scenarios and the F-35s won each of those encounters because of its sensors, weapons, and stealth technology.

Sounds a lot like the F-4 concept hence Turkey is replacing the F-4 with the F-35. They will probably play the same role. Then again it could be because the F-4 is so damn old. I think the design that is chosen for the TF-X program will let us know what Turkish military planners think about the F-35. Perhaps they have already decided as they will replace their F-16's with a more agile stealth jet.
