LONDON — A £472 million ($670 million) deal to continue work on a program to build a new class of Type 26 anti-submarine frigate has been sealed by the Ministry of Defence and shipbuilder BAE Systems, but both sides are being coy about when the warship's production will get underway.

    Type 26 frigate design

The basic GCS frigate has a flexible design to allow it to adapt to a range of weaponry and sensors. It will allow new technology upgrades and execute different strategic landscape shifts.

The frigate is designed for modularity and flexibility. It has clean angular lines for operating stealth. The stern has a mission bay, and a hangar will be built to hold a Merlin / Wildcat helicopter.

The bay ramp allows deployment of rigid-hulled inflatable boats, unmanned surface vehicles or a towed array sonar. The flight deck of the frigate allows for landing of a heavy lift helicopter, such as a Chinook.

The design details of the ship were pared to the initial specifications revealed in 2009, in order to cut down its building costs. The new 2011 design shows the Type 26 to have a displacement of 5,400t, length of 148m and maximum beam of 19m.

The GCS will have a crew of 118, and berths to accommodate 72 embarked troops.

also there are getting to grips on the type 31 which is a smaller frigate around the 3000 tonne range which i suspect is for export and for and extended reach beyond the coast guard of which 5 are to be built to make up for the shortfall as 13 type 26's were supposed to be built but money was set aside for only 8 ships leaving 5 remainder which is where the type 31 come in as a gp frigate. they may build more of them as it will cost less than the type 26 which is the idea anyway.

BAE has released designs for the GP frigates - two offers called Avenger and Cutlass-class.

According to Jane's, the designs are based on the River Batch-2 OPV and the Al-Shamikh class corvette (Oman Navy), respectively.

So this is how the future of RN's surface combatant fleet is going to turn out :

    6 x Type 45 Daring-class DDGs
    8 x Type 26 GCS FFGs
    5 x Type 31 GP FFGs

Are there any plans to expand on the numbers of LPHs and LPDs?

i know theres the type 26 which will be the full fat 6000+ tonne frigate. and there will be supplemented with the type 31 which wil be at 3000 tonnes .
the type 31 is more attracted for export really. but we are buying them as its cheaper and we can buy more of them.

as for their design influence? im not so sure if there are going all out then i doubt they would use a old design

but we are ordering more batch2 river class patrol vessels.

oh and i would not trust janes to much
