Israel, US Agree to 10-Year Defense Deal

WASHINGTON -- Israel and the United States have agreed to a ten-year defense deal, the largest and longest such agreement between the two nations.

The agreement will be signed Wednesday at the US Department of State, according to a government news release. No other details have been made public.

The agreement is the follow-on to a $30 billion, 10-year memorandum of understanding signed in 2007.

Defense News first reported over the summer that the latest US offer stands at $3.8 billion annually, which includes some $400 million to be spent in Israel on cooperative missile defense and other pre-agreed joint programs. As a condition of expanding Israel’s top line from $30 billion to $38 billion over the coming ten years, Washington is insisting on removing a 30-year-old privilege whereby Israel is able to convert a significant portion of grant dollars into shekels for local research, development and procurement.

There is quite a few things Israel are interested in from USA:
V-22 Osprey: Israel are interested in acquiring 6 but was delayed due to budget strains and procurements of the F-35.
KC-46 refueling craft: KC-707s are getting aged and would need to be replaced soon. It has no lethal capabilities but would be allow them to hit target at long distance.

By coupling the KC-46 with the F-35 Israel will be further expanding its air superiority in the region. Egypt isn't a threat for Israel so im not counting them but now Iran is easier to target. Before an air raid against Iran would be very difficult and operations couldn't be carried on a large scale. They also needed to cross over Saudi Arabia to strike Iran, now they can easily fly over war torn Syria and Iraq. I doubt Syrian Radars would catch them.

Most of Syria's Radars are obsolete Soviet Radars, Egypt has an agreement but I will say Egypt could make Israel have a headache if they went to war and for Iran their air defense needs to modernize quicker and for Iraq, well we both know what is going on there.

Does the US plan to induct any missile defense systems that Israel is also using? I believe the MML has test fired Iron Dome and Stunner.

I have to think the US is more interested in its own developments like AIM-9X or MHTK then it is in a joint development. Shame too since many of the missiles Irsael uses are top notch. Arrow could be a useful augment for Aegis Ashore instead of THAAD and Iron Dome is great for static defense, which is still needed in Afghanistan.

I don't think we are getting anything free from Israel. We don't need anything they have but they need us because we spend a lot of money on R&D for military projects and they get access to it very quickly, and we give them a lot of money.
