Whatever plane is the outcome of this program I think it should have some (but still very limited) role in a high-intensity conflict. We can't afford to spend big money for a plane (or potentially two) and have it sit on the sidelines when it matters the most.

Its a CAS plane, so it supposed to carry a lot of ordnance right? Load it to the brim with long-range decoys like the MALD-J or upcoming "Super MALD". The MALD has a range of something like 600 miles so it can be launched from far outside the range of even the most advanced Chinese and Russian air defenses. That would free up more fourth-generation fighters (mostly F-16Cs) to team up with the F-22s and F-35s to go head-to-head with A2/AD elements while still getting the decoys to confuse their air defenses. Once the threat environment is permissive enough, then you can bring it the envisioned capabilities of the aircraft to bear.

We can't afford to let anything go to waste. Not now, and especially not in the future.

Wonder if the MALD can be used not only as a decoy but also as a mini-cruise missile.

Launch it towards enemy territory as a decoy, if it gets shot down then great, if it doesn't that could be good too if it can continue and impact a target to take out parked aircraft.

As for the A-10 replacement, there is no replacement for the A-10. These smaller and much less capable close air support aircraft are fine against terrorists who don't have any air defense but these aircraft won't be of any use if we get into a real fight against Russia, China, Syria, Iran, or North Korea. The A-10 should be rewinged, upgraded, and kept flying for another 20-30 years.

The A-10 has eleven wing stations for weapons and a huge gun that can turn lightly armored vehicles, trucks, and buildings into Swiss cheese. It also has two engines and is built to take a hit from mandpad weapons and still make it home.

The F-35 has stealth and can drop two bombs from internal weapons bays but those bombs have to be released while the aircraft is flying level so the chances of hitting any moving target are about zero and you can't use a GPS bomb on a moving target. So, for the F-35 to be able to hit moving targets it has to have bombs on it's wing stations. It has four wing stations but if you put bombs out there then the aircraft is no longer stealth. And the F-35 only has one engine so if it gets hit from a ground launched infrared missile the aircraft is lost. The idea of replacing the A-10 with the F-35 is ridiculous.

I think what happened was after the first Persian Gulf War the US Air Force realized that they can fight a war and win and bring almost every pilot home if they bomb from high altitude. The close air support mission is low level and dangerous. So, this idiot Air Force general who thinks the F-35 can replace the A-10 is putting his pilots safety above the ground troops. If he replaces the A-10 with the F-35 he can eliminate the low level close air support role and drop bombs from altitude on enemy tanks. So what if it's not nearly as accurate as an A-10. He thinks the US Army should have to fight against the enemy army and the US Air Force should only bomb from high altitude where it's safe.

What should happen is the US Army should take over the A-10 and the close air support role and have Army pilots fly out of Air Force bases supported by Air Force refuelers.
