Britain to protect the Falklands with a £78million ‘Sky Sabre’ missile defence system after Argentina buys new fighter jets

BRITAIN has spent £78million on a new missile defence shield for the Falklands — as Argentina bolsters its air power with a fleet of fighter jets.

Sky Sabre uses the same technology as Israel's imposing Iron Dome system and is designed to destroy incoming rockets and shells.

Mobile radar units known as Giraffes will detect incoming rockets on the Falklands
Radar can track a missile and software then works out its predicted path before it is intercepted and destroyed before it can hit its target.

The defence boost forms part of a £280million upgrade of the islands' firepower announced by former Defence Secretary Michael Fallon in 2015.

Excellent system. CAMM's a highly mobile, medium-range missile-defense system that's also modular, so it can likely accommodate other missiles such as the American ESSM or even South African Umkhonto or Israeli Barak-8 (MRSAM).

CAMM is based on the ASRAAM missile family, though it has a newer seeker. With a surface range of 25km and 45km for the extended range system it's a bit short versus ESSM, but still a very credible weapon system.

Comparable in performance to the South African Umkhonto.

    Israeli MRSAM.

    And Norwegian/American NASAMS SL-ESSM.
